Saint Jean de Cole
is a small and picturesque village with a castle, a large church, a priory, and beautifully shaped stone bridge
over a lovely stretch of river, lots of colombage (half-timbered houses).
The Chateau de la Marthonie, is a functional and attractive castle which sits on one side of the main square.
Dating back to the 12th century although most of the present buiding is 15th century reconstruction, with a 17th century wing.
The church in the square of Saint-Jean-de-Cole, has a particularly unique design in Perigord.Moving along from the square past
the stone houses is the river and its bridge. The bridge over the river is a beautiful arched, stone bridge dating from
the Middle Ages and has a picturesque of the village. the river Cole gently wids its way along the side of the village.
The houses in the village are reminiscent of the Cotswolds, with many having the traditional tiled rooves of the region.
Many of the 'colombage' houses date from medieval times.
Every year during the weekend nearest the 8th of May St Jean de Cole has a flower festival (Les Floralies).
Over a hundred exhibitors show and sell plants and garden products. It is a very colourful event and a interesting time to see the village.
